How it works: It works basically like the automail in Fullmetal Alchemist. (Yeah, why not? |D ) In a nut shell, it comes in two parts: one part of it attaches to the "stump" and connects to the nerves and stuff,  called the 'socket', which is what makes the 'Driver' of the bio-limb able to move and control it.  The second part is the actual limb portion, made in whatever appearance the 'driver' desires.
The initial surgery to attach stump to socket hurts like hell. But it only hurts half as bad as when socket and limb are attached. There is a sharp stab of pain that only really lasts a few seconds, but depending on how strong the driver is, determines if they pass out or not.
Recovery period veries from one to five years, again depending on how strong the driver is.

Brief History and Facts:  The ones who make and maintain bio-limbs are called mechanics. They have to be well versed in anatomy and mechanics in order to be able to create functioning beta-limbs, after all.

Appearance: Basically, a beta-limb can come in whatever shape or form the driver and mechanic can come up with. Usually though, it will be made to look like the limb that was lost.
Unless it's some special model, all beta-limbs have a 'top plate' that is there to protect the innards of the limb, but also for cosmetic purposes. The extent of the top plate design varies. Most often it wouldn't be an extensive pattern, but for ones with a bit more money, they can get extreamly creative. They also come in a multitude of colors, and can be painted (much like a car can.)
These patterns then become specific to that particular driver. No two snowflakes are alike; no two drivers have the same beta-limb pattern.  Therefore, if more than one limb is missing, both beta-limbs will have the same pattern for that driver.
There is also an option for a 'Synthetic Skin' cover. It slides on the limb like a glove on a hand. It's often made of slicon, and painted to match the drivers skin color. (Or anycolor the driver wants for that mater. Though people opt for the synthetic skin to hide the fact that they have a beta-limb, usually.)
See my character Census [link] for an example (on his ref it says 'bio-limbs'. I have since changed the name to 'beta-limbs'.), or ask ~Skurdy if you have questions.
Truthfully, if you know how Edward Elric has automail in Fullmetal Alchemist, this all works simaler to that. I just... explained it more.
I've changed the name and facts of it so I can use it for my characters and roleplays and it's not total copyright infringment. |D

:bulletblue:OTHER:
-"Beta-limb" can be spelt several ways, it doesn't really matter: Beta-limb, Betalimb or beta limb. (But the "proper" way is Beta-limb.)
- If you wish to use beta-limbs, ask/let me know.
- I wanna see any creations you make with the Beta limbs concept. =D
